Picking the right soil is the part of repotting that people guess at most. Unfortunately, a wrong guess usually shows up a month later as soggy roots, yellowing leaves, or a sad, stalled plant.
It is easy to see why: standard, big-box potting soil looks convenient. It comes in one giant bag, promises to feed everything, and feels like an easy win. But in the wild, an epiphytic tropical plant clinging to a humid tree branch lives in an entirely different world than a desert succulent rooted in rocky, sun-baked sand.
When you put every indoor plant into the exact same dense potting soil, you force vastly different root systems to adapt to the same moisture levels. Here is a simple guide to our three custom, hand-blended Over Grown soil mixes, why they work, and how to match them to your plant collection.
Why One Bag for Everything Doesn't Work
The primary job of potting soil isn't just holding water, it is balancing moisture retention with root aeration.
Plant roots need oxygen just as much as they need water. Dense, fine-particle potting soil acts like a heavy sponge: it holds onto water for weeks, squishing out all the tiny air pockets. For water-loving plants, that fine moisture is fine, but for chunk-loving tropicals or drought-tolerant desert species, sitting in dense soil leads directly to root rot.
By tailoring the texture, chunkiness, and drainage speed of the substrate to what your plant's roots naturally expect, you eliminate the single biggest cause of houseplant failure.
Chunky Mix
- The Texture: Large, chunky, and loose. It leaves big air pockets in the pot so oxygen flows freely around the root system.
- What's in It: Pine bark, LECA, coco coir, potting soil, and worm castings.
- How It Drains: Water glides straight through in seconds, leaving behind damp, highly oxygenated surfaces without any stagnant water pockets.
- Who It's For: Aroids, climbers, and heavy rooters with thick, fleshy root systems that need high aeration and long-lasting soil structure.
- Best Matched Plants:
- Monsteras
- Philodendrons
- Pothos
- Alocasias
- Anthuriums
- Ficus
Dry Mix
- The Texture: Gritty, coarse, and heavy on inorganic mineral components that won't pack down or stay wet.
- What's in It: Lava rock, calcined clay, coco coir, and potting soil.
- How It Drains: Ultra-fast drainage. The mineral porous rocks absorb just enough moisture to hydrate the plant while letting excess water drain instantly, keeping stem bases dry.
- Who It's For: Cacti, succulents, drought-tolerant species, and semi-succulents prone to root rot if left in damp soil.
- Best Matched Plants:
- Cacti & Succulents
- Snake Plants
- ZZ Plants
- Hoyas
- Palms
- Dracaenas
Fine Mix
- The Texture: Smooth, uniform, and fine-grained without big bark chunks or heavy debris, giving delicate root strands plenty of surface area to anchor into.
- What's in It: Coco coir, calcined clay, and potting soil.
- How It Drains: Holds soft, consistent moisture throughout the pot while the calcined clay prevents the fine coir media from compacting into dense sludge.
- Who It's For: Small plants, delicate starter propagations, prayer plants, and tropical foliage with fine, hair-like root systems that hate drying out completely.
- Best Matched Plants:
- Marantaceae family (Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe)
- Fine-rooted plants (Ferns, Tradescantia, Peperomias)
- Small plants and fresh soil propagations
