Caring for Your Stromanthes

Caring for Your Stromanthes

Stromanthes are some of the most striking plants in the indoor jungle world. Closely related to Calatheas and Marantas, they are members of the prayer plant family, meaning they also move their leaves throughout the day to follow the light. With their dramatic, elongated leaves featuring splashes of beautiful shades, they provide a constant pop of color that looks like a watercolor painting.

At Over Grown, we consider the Stromanthe a true showstopper. While they have a reputation for being a bit finicky, providing them with the right conditions will keep those vibrant colors saturated and those leaf edges smooth and healthy.

Stromanthe Lighting

Stromanthes are native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, where they thrive in the dappled light of the forest floor. They need brightness to maintain their variegation but are sensitive to harsh exposure.

Stromanthe Watering

Stromanthes prefer a "just right" moisture level, meaning they enjoy being consistently hydrated but cannot tolerate sitting in stagnant water.

Stromanthe Soil and Fertilization

An airy soil that retains some moisture without becoming heavy is vital for a healthy Stromanthe root system.

Stromanthe Humidity & Leaf Care

If you want to keep a Stromanthe happy, you must think about the air. High humidity is the single most important factor in preventing crispy leaf edges.

Stromanthe Pests and Treatment

While relatively resilient, the high-humidity environment that Stromanthes love can occasionally attract certain pests if airflow is poor.

Stromanthes are very communicative! If they aren't happy, they will show you through their foliage.
