Many plant lovers go through the phrase of plant parenthood where every trip to the shop results in a new green friend. But there comes a point where "lush" starts to feel like "cluttered." The honest truth is that more isn't always better. A collection of many struggling plants will never bring you the same peace as a few thriving ones. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your home and your plants is to take a step back and audit what you’ve grown.
Set aside an afternoon, grab a coffee, and pull each plant to a well-lit table. Ask yourself these four questions..
Q1: Does it have a permanent home with the right light?
If a plant has been sitting on your floor because there’s no room on the windowsill, or if it’s tucked in a dark corner despite needing bright indirect light, it doesn't have a home. A plant without a proper light will not be able to thrive.
Q2: Do I actually know how to care for it?
We all buy "wishlist" plants on impulse. But if you find yourself constantly Googling why the leaves are crispy or if you’re terrified to water it, you haven't mastered its system yet. There is no shame in admitting a plant’s needs don't align with your current lifestyle.
Q3: Is it thriving or just surviving?
Take a look at the new growth. Are the leaves getting smaller? Is the stem leggy and weak? A plant that is "just surviving" is often a source of stress rather than joy. If it hasn't pushed out a healthy leaf in a while, it might be time to change its environment, or its care.
Q4: Would I buy this plant again today?
This is the ultimate test. If you walked into the shop right now and saw this exact plant on the shelf, would you reach for it again? If the answer is "no," you may not want to hang on to it anymore.
If a plant failed the test, don't just toss it! There are plenty of ways to give it a second life:
- Our Monthly Plant Swaps: This is our favorite solution. Bring your "audit fails" to the shop and trade them for something that actually fits your space.
- Gift to a Friend: Sometimes a change of environment is all a plant needs.
- Bring it in for a Second Opinion: If you love the plant but it’s declining, bring it into the store! We can help you troubleshoot the soil, check for pests, or suggest a new plant care product to try and help it thrive again.
The goal of an audit isn't just to have fewer plants, it’s to have the right plants. Once you’ve cleared the clutter, look at the gaps in your home intentionally.
- Map your Light Zones: Now that the windowsill is clear, do you have room for a high-light statement piece?
- Set a Mood: Instead of buying whatever looks cool, choose plants that fit the "vibe" of the room, whether that’s architectural and modern or soft and trailing
When you curate your collection, you are choosing to surround yourself with living things that you understand, that fit your light, and that genuinely make you happy every time you walk by. Quality over quantity isn't just a design choice, it’s the secret to being a successful, stress-free plant parent.
